Ten members of Eritrea soccer team seek asylum in Botswana

eritrean team

Ten players from the Eritrean football team are seeking asylum in Botswana, the latest in a series of defections by athletes from a country under investigation by the United Nations for human-rights violations. The Eritrean national team was in Botswana to play a World Cup qualifying match. The players refused to board their plane home on Wednesday and were detained by police, Dick Bayford, who has been hired by the Eritrean Movement for Democracy and Human Rights (EMDHR) to represent the players, told Reuters. "I have been engaged by the movement to assist in keeping the football players in the country after they received reports that there was an attempt to forcibly remove the players from Botswana," he said. Similar mass defections by Eritrean soccer players occurred in Kenya in 2009, Tanzania in 2011 and Uganda in 2012. They were fleeing a country where slavery-like practices are routine and torture widespread, the United Nations said after a year-long investigation.

Kenya 0-0 Ethiopia

Kenya were required to win by a 3-0 margin to advance to the second round but lacked urgency as striker Michal Olunga squandered several chances Harambee Stars were bundled out of Chan qualifiers after they failed to find the back of the net against Ethiopia in return leg match played at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday. Like it was the case in Ethiopia a fortnight ago where Kenya had a chance to grab a vital away goal in a 2-0 defeat, the Bobby Williamson charges failed to capitalize on a poorly awarded penalty as Gor Mahia marksman Ali ‘Teargas’ Abondo hit the post from twelve yards. The penalty miss that could have brought Harambee Stars back into the match, summed up Kenya’s disappointment in the tournament that is reserved for local-based players as Abondo was quickly hauled off to be replaced by Tusker’s new signing Danson Kago.

Ethiopia keen to send Harambee Stars packing

Walya Antelopes

Ethiopia coach Yohannes Sahle optimistic that his visiting side will toss out Kenya from Chan qualifiers on Saturday and progress to next round Walya Antelopes coach Yohannes Sahle has assured Kenyans that his team will make it hard for Harambee Stars during Saturday’s return leg match of Chan qualifiers at Nyayo Stadium. Ethiopia enjoys a 2-0 advantage from first leg, and any draw or a one goal difference loss will see the visitors’ progress to the next round at the expense of their hosts. Despite crying foul on the manner his team was received after landing in the country on Thursday, Sahle is adamant his side has what it takes to qualify.

Giro’s first ever Ethiopian rider ‘in at the deep end’

Lampre sends Grmay back to Ethiopia as much as possible from the Milan or Rome airport so that he feels at home and because it sits on a plain at altitude. He may be short of paved roads, but is able to ride up to 2800 or 3000 metres. “My fist time in Europe in 2011, everything was hard,” Grmay said. “Everything, the weather, the roads, riding in the peloton, the cold, the climbs, the downhill… Everything was hard and everything was new in cycling.”
