White House Nominates First Ambassador To Somalia In Over 2 Decades

The U.S. government on Tuesday announced the nomination of America’s first ambassador to Somalia since 1991. Katherine Simonds Dhanani, a long-time diplomat and a Foreign Service veteran, would fill the post that has been vacant since the violent ouster of Somalia’s Siad Barre-led government.In a statement released Tuesday, Jen Psaki, the U.S. State Department spokeswoman, said that the nomination was a sign of the “deepening relationship” between the two countries.

Two Russian pilots kidnapped in Sudan’s Darfur

South Sudan conflict: Leaders agree partial ceasefire but ‘critical issues’ still unresolved

South Sudanese warring sides have agreed on a ceasefire after the country's 13-month-long civil war has killed thousands. President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar reached an agreement after four-day-long talks held in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. "Complete cessation of hostilities in South Sudan is expected as of this morning [Monday 2 February]," Seyoum Mesfin, a negotiator from the regional Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), was quoted by AFP as saying.
